National emissions and removals of greenhouse gases were calculated by SMED, on behalf of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, for the annual greenhouse gas inventory in accordance with the guidelines under the UNFCCC. Read more on www.naturvardsverket.se/klimatutslapp (in Swedish) or in Swedish submissions of greenhouse gas inventories on the UNFCCC website http://unfccc.int/national_reports/annex_i_ghg_inventories/national_inventories_submissions/items/8812.php. When .. presents, this indicates that the value is zero Biogenic carbon dioxide arises from renewable organic materials, for example different parts of plants, sewage sludge or slaughter wastes, e.g. biofuel. Biofuels can be gaseous, i.e. biogas, liquid, i.e. ethanol, or solid, i.e. wood, grains or wood pellets. Peat is not considered a biofuel. In 2022, large amounts of fossil gas leaked from the gas pipelines Nord Stream 1 and 2, which run through the Swedish economic zone. This leakage contained carbon dioxide, methane and other hydrocarbons, but is not included in the statistics in SSD. The emission of methane from Nord Stream within the Swedish economic zone amounted to almost 209 thousand tons, which corresponds to more than a doubling of the methane emissions. The emission of carbon dioxide within the Swedish economic zone was only a fraction of the national emissions of carbon dioxide (ca 0.007%).
