Footnotes

The difference between the amount of packaging put on the market and amount of recycled packaging is explained by the fact that all packaging waste is not separated at source for recycling why it does not end up in the recycling systems. The packaging waste might instead be discarded in other waste fractions such as in waste to energy recovery.

packaging types
PET-bottles
Only deposit cans included in the deposit return system. When reporting to the EU, deposit cans are not separately reported, but included in metal packaging.
Metal, excluding deposit cans
Until reference year 2015, Swedish deposit cans and privately imported beverage cans, collected and recycled within the metal packaging collection system, have been allocated to the category deposit cans. This means that these amounts have been reported as deposit cans. For the reference year 2016 Swedish deposit cans, collected and recycled within the main metal packaging collection system, have been allocated to the category deposit cans. However, privately imported beverage cans have not been allocated to the category deposit cans. This means that the privately imported beverage cans are reported as the category metal, excluding deposit from 2016 onwards. The amount of privately imported beverage cans is an unknown subset in the category metal, excluding deposit cans.
Deposit cans
Only cans included in the deposit return system. When reporting to the EU, deposit cans are not separately reported, but included in metal packaging.
There are breaks in time series. There was a decrease in the statistics between 2015 and 2016 due to the fact that privately imported beverage cans are included in the category of metal, excluding deposit cans in the statistics for 2016. 2015 and earlier privately imported beverage cans, collected and recycled within the metal packaging collection system, were included in the category of deposit cans. There are also breaks in time series between 2016 and 2017. From the reference year 2017, it has been decided that privately imported beverage cans should not be included in the statistics on recycled deposit cans.
Wood
For Wood, preparation for reuse is included in ”Recycling, tonnes” and ”Recycling, percent”.
There are breaks in time series between 2015 and 2016. In 2016 the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency clarified to the respondents how to report wood packaging recovery and recycling. This had an impact on the statistics for 2016 and the results are very different from previous years. There are also beaks in time series between 2016 and 2017 which, according to the main producer responsibility organization, are due to changed reporting routines with their affiliated producers.
observations
Recycling, percent
Observation ”Recycling, percent” is calculated by dividing the recycled amount of packaging by the amount of packaging put on the market.
