Obs:

Between 1970M01 and 2001M10, the central government debt is not broken down per market. For that period, only the total central government debt is reported.

Exchange rate effects on derivatives affect the central government debt as of 1996M02. See “Total central government debt, including debt management transactions” in the previously published report Swedish Central Government Debt 1996M02–2001M10.

Before November 2001, the central government debt was reported excluding inflation compensation.

In conjunction with the central government debt outcome for January 2012, certain changes were made to the procedure for reporting the debt. The debt statistics going back to November 2001 was at that time revised on the Debt Office website in accordance with this procedure.

In brief, the changes meant that collateral is included in the central government debt, reverse repos in our own government securities and a more consistent reporting using the trade date accounting method. The changes resulted in the reported debt initially becoming slightly higher according to these new accounting principles. See the press release: Överskott i statsbudgeten 2011 - Riksgälden.se (riksgalden.se).

Before November 2001, the central government debt was reported excluding inflation compensation.

As of January 2024, the definition of the debt in the liquidity management operations has been changed. For the central government debt, bank account balances are recorded on settlement date instead of trade date, which also affects the debt’s size. The accounting method now applied for the part of the central government debt consisting of balances in bank accounts is settlement date accounting, replacing trade date accounting. In addition, the Debt Office includes an adjusting entry in the reporting, for amounts on the way to or from the bank accounts. The sum of the settlement date amount and the adjusting entry forms the trade date balance that was previously reported as part of the central government debt. Until now, solely settlement date accounting has been applied for the Debt Office’s account at the Riksbank, which is used for settling payments in Swedish kronor. With the new adjusting entry, money going into and out of this account is also included, providing a more accurate debt figure. See the press release: Överskott för staten i maj 2024 - Riksgälden.se (riksgalden.se).
