Obs:

Share in percent refers to protected area compared to Swedens entire area. From 2023, Swedens entire area is calculated using the Land Surveys data on municipal and county boundaries (geodata Topografi 10). The statistics refers to areas that were valid (i.e. had gained legal force) on the December 31 reference year. Statistics of nature reserves, Natura 2000 and nature conservation agreements include areas without restrictions, for example without forestry regulations. Agreement between government agencies
Agreement since 2010 between the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and the Swedish Fortifications Administration, regarding areas that were designated 2003–2004 in the framework of the government assignment for inventory of protected state forests. The areas lack formal protection under the rules of the Environmental Code, but through the agreement and government decisions, they still have formal protection.
Nature conservation agreement
An agreement signed between the landowner and the state, through the Swedish National Forest Agency, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency or the county administrative boards. Municipalities can also sign conservation agreements with landowners. The purpose of nature conservation agreements is to develop and maintain high nature values. The protection is limited in time and weaker than area protection according to the Environmental Code.
The instruments for protection included in the statistics are national parks, nature reserves, habitat protection areas, Natura 2000 areas, nature conservation agreements and intra-governmental agreements. The statistics are cleared from overlapping areas. Nature reserves, Natura 2000 and nature conservation agreements include areas without restrictions, for example without regulations against forestry. Nature conservation agreements include the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s and the Swedish Forest Agency’s nature conservation agreements, the White-Backed Woodpecker Action Plan, and “ekoparker. The mountain region is the area above the boundary for mountain forests in accordance with the Swedish Forest Agency delimitation. There is a boundary for mountain forests in parts of Norrbotten, Västerbotten, Jämtland, and Dalarna counties. Share in percent refers to protected areas in the subalpine region, compared to the entire area of the subalpine region. Type of environment is based on data on water types from Lantmäteriet (the Swedish mapping, cadastral and land registration authority).
