Obs:

Changes in divisions of counties and municipalities affect the statistics for some years. For more information, see Statistics Swedens withdrawal system for regional divisions: REGINA. Two dots (..) mean that value is missing The statistics refers to areas that were valid (i.e. had gained legal force) on the December 31 reference year. Number of areas regarding agreement with the Swedish Fortifications Agency, is taken from the Agreement on the protection of particularly valuable natural forest areas, 5. Natural forests Nv Dnr 310-167-10 No. Nature conservation agreement
An agreement signed between the landowner and the state, through the Swedish National Forest Agency, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency or the county administrative boards. Municipalities can also sign conservation agreements with landowners. The purpose of nature conservation agreements is to develop and maintain high nature values. The protection is limited in time and weaker than area protection according to the Environmental Code.
Natura 2000 sites in the Exclusive Economic Zone are not included in the data by county. In the national totals, sites in the Exclusive Economic Zone are included. Data by county and municipality are not available for the following types of protection: 'time-limited protection: nature conservation agreements' and 'intra-governmental agreements: the Swedish Fortifications Agency'. Data by municipality are not available for the following types of protection: Natura 2000 SPA, Natura 2000 SCI, wildlife sanctuary, and natural monument. The starting year of the statistics varies between protection categories and depends on when data collection commenced for each respective category. Missing values therefore do not necessarily indicate that the protection category was absent in the reference year; rather, they most often imply that data are unavailable for that year. If a protected area is divided by a region border, all subsets are counted individually. Aggregation of number of protected areas from one regional division to a higher level, may result in incorrect sums. The number of counties cannot be summed up to the number in the country, because some areas overlap several counties.

Due to mergers, the number of wildlife sanctuaries in Skåne decreased in 2008 compared to the previous year.

The difference in the number of wildlife sanctuaries in 2013 compared with previous years is partly due to a new calculation method. In the basic register, several objects can be grouped and be given a joint ID, because they are included in the same decision. Before 2013, the number of areas was based on the number of IDs. As of 2013, the number of individual objects is used instead.
Overlapping objects can be found in statistics on the number of protected areas.
