Source: Educational attainment of the population Description of education: Educational attainment of the population The new Swedish Standard Classification of Education, SUN 2020, was implemented in the 2019 version of the Swedish Register of Education. The classification of the level of education remains unchanged compared with SUN 2000. As a result of the implementation of SUN 2020, at the 1-digit level, the area 8 Services decreased by 1.4%, while the areas 4 Natural Sciences, mathematics and Information and Communication technologies (ICTs) and 5 Engineering, manufacturing and construction increased by 1.3% and 0.2% respectively among persons aged 25-64. Other changes are minor at the 1-digit level. For further information about SUN 2020, see Section 5.1 in the Quality Declaration for the Educational attainment of the population (UF0506) and www.scb.se/SUN (Swedish version only). Duration of residence refers to the total amount of time that a person has been registered in the population in Sweden and is specified for persons who have immigrated to Sweden. Certain foreign citizens who are born in Sweden must apply for a residence permit. They are usually granted a residence permit for the same period as their parents. If the parents do not have a residence permit, the child´s application is examined together with the parent´s application. A statistical method is used to protect the data of individuals in the statistics presented. For this reason, the presented totals do not always equal the sum of their reported components. See also section 2.2.6 Model assumptions in the quality declaration documentation on Statistics Sweden’s website. The region of birth is based on the country of birth listed in the population register and based on the distribution of each year. In order to be classified as ´gainfully employed´, the person must have earned income exceeding an estimated limit, or have submitted tax returns for business activity during the year concerned. The limit that determines whether or not an employed person is gainfully employed is estimated using a model-based method. The aim is to find a level of earned income that, as far as possible, corresponds to the definition of ´employment´ of the International Labour Organization (ILO). People with earned income that is higher than the limit are assumed to be gainfully employed. Level of education: The highest level of education refers to the highest level of education obtained at the end of the spring term of the year concerned.
The source of the variable is Statistics Sweden´s Education Register. Stated with the education code according to the Swedish education nomenclature (SUN code). See ´´Swedish education nomenclature (SUN). Part 1. Systematic version´´ (MIS 1988:4 and 1996:1).

In this table, the following grouping is used:

Compulsory education
- primary and lower secondary education, less than 9 years
- primary and lower secondary education, 9 years (equivalent)

Upper secondary education
- upper secondary education, maximum of 2 years
- upper secondary education, 3 years

Post-secondary education
- post-secondary education, less than 3 years
- post-secondary education, 3 years or longer
- postgraduate education
Note that a level of education comprises both studies concluded with a degree and studies concluded without a degree, excluding postgraduate studies that only include persons with degrees. An education must cover no less than one term of full-time studies to enable level classification. For further information on principles for classifying the level of education, see Svensk utbildningsnomenklatur (SUN) Note that educational data might be incomplete for a small number of persons. It could concern people with degrees from abroad or with private degrees or with internal company-educations or people with old degrees. Region of birth: From 2004, Cyprus and Turkey are reported under Europe excluding Sweden. Source: Population by Labour market status Criteria for being classified as employed, Population by Labour market status Note that educational data might be incomplete for a small number of persons. It could concern people with degrees from abroad or with private degrees or with internal company-educations or people with old degrees.
