Obs:

Nature reserves are formed by the county councils and the municipalities, according to Chapter 7 Sections 4 – 6 of the Environmental Code. In Sweden and many other countries, forming nature reserves is one of the most common ways to protect valuable nature in a sustainable way. Nature reserves can be formed according to Chapter 7 Section 4 of the Environmental Code. Habitat protection is designed to preserve small areas for nationally endangered species in forested or agricultural areas. The Government or the authority appointed by the Government may take the necessary measures to conserve habitat protection areas. The Swedish Forest Agency is responsible for designation of habitat protection areas (SBO) in forest land. Government may take the necessary measures to conserve habitat protection areas. The county administrative boards are responsible for designation of habitat protection areas (ÖBO) in agriculture land. Changes in divisions of counties and municipalities affect the statistics for some years. For more information, see Statistics Swedens withdrawal system for regional divisions: REGINA. Two dots (..) mean that value is missing Shares and areas cannot be summed up, because different types of protection may overlap. Since 1 January 2007, Västmanland county no longer includes Heby municipality. Please note that the figures for the county are not comparable with earlier figures. A land or water area that belongs to the state may with the consent of Parliament be designated a national park by the Government for the purpose of preserving a large contiguous area of a certain landscape type in its natural state or essentially unchanged (Environmental Code, Chapter 7). Nature conservation areas is a type of protection supported by the former nature conservation legislation. It has the same purpose as nature reserves but is less restrictive. Designation of new nature conservation areas is no longer possible according to the current environmental legislation (Environmental Code). Due to a change in methodology, values for areas have been revised regarding 2020 och 2021.

observations

Number

Number of protected areas are presented by region. If a protected area is divided by a region border, all subsets are counted individually. Aggregation of number of protected areas from municipalities to national level may result in incorrect sums. To extract national figures it is recommended to select from the national table.

Overlapping objects can be found in statistics on the number of protected areas.

Changes in areas compared with previous years are partially due to a change in method. It affects in particular the statistics on national parks.
