Protected areas refer here to national parks, nature reserves, nature conservation areas and Natura 2000 areas.

The statistics show new protected nature in the form of completely new protected areas from 1998 and onwards, based on the original date of valid for each area. Expansions of areas formed before 1998 are not included.

Overlapping areas have been deducted.

NMD 1.1 has been used in the production of statistics from the reference year 2020. This leads to changes compared with the previous year´s statistics. The changes entail an increase in the quality of the statistics that describe habitat types within protected nature, primarily with regard to the habitat types forest land and wetlands.
