land use category

arable land

Agricultural land used for, or potentially can be used for, crop production or permanent pasture and is suitable for plowing.

land under permanent pasture

Agricultural land used for, or potentially can be conveniently used for, permanent pasture and is not suitable for plowing. In these statistics, land under permanent pasture also includes land under permanent meadow.

total agricultural land

Agricultural land used for, or potentially can be conveniently used for, crop production, permanent pasture or permanent meadow. Total agricultural land is the sum of arable land, land under permanent pasture and land under permanent meadow.

productive forest land

Forest land that is suitable for forestry and that is not significantly used for other purposes. Production is at least 1 m³sk per hectare and year. Definition according to the Swedish Forestry Act.

unproductive forest land

Forest land that is not suitable for forestry and with production less than 1 m³sk per hectare and year.

total forest land

Land spanning more than 0.5 hectares with trees higher than 5 meters and a canopy cover of more than 10 percent, or trees able to reach these thresholds in situ. Total forest land is the sum of productive forest and non-productive forest.

built up and developed land

Land occupied by buildings and associated land (for example gardens and plots, parking lots, storage areas) or other kind of facilities associated for different activities. Built up and developed land also includes land with transport infrastructure, such as roads, railways, ports and airports.

open mire

Open mire does not include peat pits.

Wetlands which are non-forested mires. Statistics on open mire are derived from the Swedish National Forest Inventory, which defines wetlands as mires, located below the mountainous area and which are non-productive forest land. Wetlands are areas where water, during a long period of the year, is close to, in or above the land surface, or vegetated bodies of water. Also temporarily dried out bottom areas of lakes, sea and watercourses are included. Forested wetlands are included under forest.

other land

The category other land is an overarching category which includes: other vegetated land, other non-vegetated land, land under glacier and non-classified land. Other land does not include: agricultural land, forest land, built up land and wetlands. Measurements are uncertain and should be considered approximate.

total land area

Total land area of all land use categories.
Due to technical differences in data processing, the total land area somewhat differs between this table and other area statistics produced by Statistics Sweden (e.g. “Land and water areas”).

total water area

Total water area is the sum of coastal waters and inland waters. Total water area and total land area sums up as total area.
