Inactive land with quarries, with no change in land use, may also be included.
As some quarries include several quarry types, the sum of the quarry type area is slightly higher than the table’s area sum.

industrial mineral quarries

Rock and gravel quarries used for the extraction of industrial minerals. An industrial mineral is a rock, a mineral or other naturally occurring material of economic value. Examples of industrial minerals are limestone, sandstone, quartzite, silica sand, graphite and talc and soapstone.

natural stone quarries

Rock and gravel quarries used for the extraction of natural stone. Natural stone are rock materials of various kinds used as building stone, for example, for building façades, stairs and kerbs. Examples of natural stone are granites, gneisses, black granite (diabases and hyperites), limestones, marble, sandstones and shales.

soil pits

Land with quarries used for the extraction soil in order to utilize the material for trade or other use.
Soil pits are included in this table although they formally may not be recognised as rock and gravel quarries.

other rock and gravel quarries

Other rock and gravel quarries in this table include rock and gravel quarries apart from industrial mineral quarries, natural stone quarries and soil pits. This category may also be called “aggregate material quarries”. Mainly used for the extraction of crushed rock and natural gravel.
