Now you have come to the page, Choose variable. This page give you the oportunity to select which variables and values you want to display in your result of the table. A variable is a property of a statistical unit. The page is divided into several boxes, one for each variable, where you can select values by click to highlight one or more values. It always starts with the statistics variable which is the main value counted in the table.

Obs:

The difference between the amount of packaging placed on the market and the amount of recycled packaging is explained by the fact that all packaging waste is not separately sorted for recycling. Significant amounts of packaging waste are instead discarded in mixed waste fractions that are usually subject to energy recovery.
Packaging placed on the market is probably underestimated. This is due to producers who for different reasons are not covered by producer responsibility. Also, private import of packaging leads to the underestimation. As a result, the recycling grade is overestimated.
To reduce the problem with overestimation an enumeration of packaging placed on the market is made from the reference year 2021. The enumeration is presented with the variable” Put on the market, tonnes (Enumerated)”. In addition, a new recycling grade is calculated and presented with the variable” Recycling, percent (Enumerated)”. The variables are based on data from waste composition analyses from Avfall Web.
From reference year 2020 new calculation points apply for several types of packaging. The clarifications on how recycling is measured leads to recycling results for 2020, and later years, are not completely comparable with previous years (up until 2019).
From January 2020, higher recycling targets apply than before for all types of packaging except for deposit PET bottles, aluminium deposit cans and wooden packaging.
The recycling target for the packaging type 'Plastic excluding PET-bottles' will expire from 2020 and has been replaced by a target for ' Plastic, including deposit PET bottles'. The same applies to 'Metal, excluding deposit cans' which has been replaced by 'Ferrous metal (steel)” and 'Aluminium, including deposit cans'. This means that the previous packaging types will be deleted from the year 2020. It also means that the quantities are not comparable with previous years.
Please note that ' Deposit PET bottles' and 'Aluminium deposit cans' respectively are subsets that should not be included in a calculation of total quantities of packaging.

observations

Recycling, percent

Observation ”Recycling, percent” is calculated by dividing the recycled amount of packaging by the amount of packaging put on the market.

observations: Recycling, percent , packaging types: Glass

The calculation point for recycling is the same for 2020 and 2019, which enables comparison between the years.

observations: Recycling, tonnes , packaging types: Glass

observations: Recycling, percent , packaging types: Plastic, including deposit PET bottles

From the reference year 2020 deposit PET bottles is included in “Plastic, including deposit PET bottles”. The packaging type “Deposit PET bottles” should therefore be seen as a subset of “Plastic, including deposit PET bottles”. The recycling target increased to 50 percent, from the earlier 30 percent, in 2020. Compared to 2019 the recycling rate for plastic packaging has significantly decreased as the calculation point for recycling has moved forward in the value chain.

observations: Recycling, percent , packaging types: Deposit PET bottles

Only PET bottles within the deposit refund system are included. When reporting to the EU, deposit PET bottles are not separately reported. They are only reported as a part of the category “Plastic, including deposit PET bottles”.

For the reference year 2020, “Material recycling, percent” has been revised to 82 percent (previously 86 percent). This is because one respondent has submitted updated information.

observations: Recycling, percent , packaging types: Ferrous metal (steel)

From reference year 2020, there are separate material recycling targets for metal packaging waste, one for ferrous metal and one for aluminium. Therefore, metal packaging is divided into two types of packaging 'Ferrous metal (steel)” and 'Aluminium, including deposit cans'. Which means that the statistic is not comparable with previous years.

observations: Recycling, percent , packaging types: Aluminium, including deposit cans

Privately imported aluminium cans are reported as the category “Aluminium, including deposit cans”. They are not part of the category “Aluminium deposit cans”, that category only includes Swedish aluminium deposit cans included in the deposit refund system. The amount of privately imported aluminium cans is an unknown quantity in the category “Aluminium, including deposit cans”.

Only cans included in the deposit return system. When reporting to the EU, deposit cans are not separately reported, but included in “Aluminium, including deposit cans”. From the reference year 2017, it has been decided that privately imported beverage cans, collected within the refund system, should not be included in the statistics on recycled aluminium deposit cans.

observations: Recycling, percent , packaging types: Wood

From the year 2020 the reporting of recycling of wooden packaging changed. Earlier repair of wooden packaging for reuse was included in “Recycling, tonnes”, this is no longer the case from the year 2020. In the recycling rate,” Recycling, percent”, repair of wooden packaging for reuse is included.
The recycling rate for 2020, and onwards, is calculated as (Recycling + reparation/ (placed on market + reparation). All in accordance with rules from the EU. Therefore, it is not possible to compare recycling with previous years.
