In order to be classified as ´gainfully employed´, the person must have earned income exceeding an estimated limit, or have submitted tax returns for business activity during the year concerned. The limit that determines whether or not an employed person is gainfully employed is estimated using a model-based method. The aim is to find a level of earned income that, as far as possible, corresponds to the definition of ´employment´ of the International Labour Organization (ILO). People with earned income that is higher than the limit are assumed to be gainfully employed.
If the number is 3 or less, it will be replaced by (..). Duration of residence refers to the total amount of time that a person has been registered in the population in Sweden and is specified for persons who have immigrated to Sweden. Certain foreign citizens who are born in Sweden must apply for a residence permit. They are usually granted a residence permit for the same period as their parents. If the parents do not have a residence permit, the child´s application is examined together with the parent´s application. As from reference year 2019, a new data source is used and a new method is applied to classify gainfully employed persons in RAMS (register-based labour market statistics). The change of source and method entails a break in the time series and comparisons of statistics on 2019 and earlier reference years must therefore be made with great caution.
New source and method in the production of register-based labour market statistics (RAMS) (in Swedish)
The region of birth is based on the country of birth listed in the population register and based on the distribution of each year. The occupations follow the classifications of the Swedish Standard Classification of Occupations 2012 (SSYK 2012). Level of education: The highest level of education refers to the highest level of education obtained at the end of the spring term of the year concerned.
The source of the variable is Statistics Sweden´s Education Register. Stated with the education code according to the Swedish education nomenclature (SUN code). See ´´Swedish education nomenclature (SUN). Part 1. Systematic version´´ (MIS 1988:4 and 1996:1).
