A variable is a property of a statistical unit. The page is divided into several boxes, one for each variable, where you can select values by click to highlight one or more values. It always starts with the statistics variable which is the main value counted in the table.

observations

Proportion of persons in percent

Because the Living Conditions Survey/SILC is a sample survey based on a national random probability sample, there is a degree of uncertainty that can be calculated. The presented percentage figures are estimations and consideration must be taken to uncertainty/margin of error when drawing conclusions. The interval that is created by the percent estimation ± margin of error here is a 95 percent confidence interval, which is an interval with a 95 percent probability including the actual percentage.

Because the Living Conditions Survey/SILC is a sample survey based on a national random probability sample, there is a degree of uncertainty that can be calculated. The presented information consists of estimations and consideration must be taken to uncertainty/margin of error when drawing conclusions. The interval that is created by the level estimation ± margin of error here is a 95 percent confidence interval, which is an interval with a 95 percent probability including the actual value.

observations: Proportion of persons in percent , indicator: at-risk-of-poverty or social exclusion

The Europe 2020 strategy promotes social inclusion, in particular through the reduction of poverty, by aiming to lift at least 20 million people out of the risk of poverty and social exclusion. This indicator corresponds to the sum of persons who are: at risk of poverty or severely materially deprived or living in households with very low work intensity. Persons are only counted once even if they are present in several sub-indicators. People living in households with very low work intensity are defined as those aged 0-59 living in households where the adults (aged 18-59) work less than 20% of their total work potential during the past year. The indicator Low work intensity can be found in the Statistical database under the label Employment, SILC Households with low work intensity.

observations: Proportion of persons in percent , indicator: at-risk-of-poverty

At risk-of-poverty are persons with an equivalised disposable income below the risk-of-poverty threshold, which is set at 60 % of the national median equivalised disposable income (after social transfers).

observations: Proportion of persons in percent , indicator: severe material deprivation

Material deprivation covers indicators relating to economic strain and durables. Severely materially deprived persons have living conditions severely constrained by a lack of resources, they experience at least 4 out of 9 following deprivations items: cannot afford i) to pay rent or utility bills, ii) keep home adequately warm, iii) face unexpected expenses, iv) eat meat, fish or a protein equivalent every second day, v) a week holiday away from home, vi) a car, vii) a washing machine, viii) a colour TV, or ix) a telephone.

observations: Proportion of persons in percent , indicator: material deprivation

The indicator is defined as the percentage of population with an enforced lack of at least three out of nine material deprivation items described above (see Severe Material Deprivation).

observations: Proportion of persons in percent , indicator: in-work at-risk-of-poverty

The rate of poverty risk (according to the definitions of at risk of poverty above) among individuals who are ‘in-work’, meaning individuals who were employed for more than half the reference period.
