Now you have come to the page, Choose variable. This page give you the oportunity to select which variables and values you want to display in your result of the table. A variable is a property of a statistical unit. The page is divided into several boxes, one for each variable, where you can select values by click to highlight one or more values. It always starts with the statistics variable which is the main value counted in the table.

Obs:

Natura 2000 includes valuable natural areas with species and/or habitats that are regarded as especially worthy of protection from a European perspective. Protection consists of two different types of areas:

- SPA (Special Protection Areas) are particular protection areas for certain species of birds and is governed by the Council Directive on the conservation of wild birds.

- SCI (Sites of Community Interest) are areas of joint interest for other groups of species of plants and animals as well as nature types. SCI is governed by the Habitats Directive.

Sweden and the other EU countries must see that the necessary conservation measures are taken in the areas, according to the directives. The provisions in the directives have been entered in the Environmental Code and apply to both types of Natura 2000 areas. All areas are of national interest according to Chapter 4 of the Environmental Code. According to Chapter 7 Section 28a, permission is required to conduct operations or take measures that can significantly affect the environment in this kind of an area. Most of the Natura 2000 areas are also protected as national parks or nature reserves. Since 2011, most of the areas have also been highlighted as special conservation areas (SAC), with established conservation plans.

Many of the areas have been proposed as both SPA and SCI and thus overlap each other. This overlapping has been deducted in the statistics on the areas in the SPA and SCI.
Nature reserves are formed by the county councils and the municipalities, according to Chapter 7 Sections 4 – 6 of the Environmental Code. In Sweden and many other countries, forming nature reserves is one of the most common ways to protect valuable nature in a sustainable way. Nature reserves can be formed according to Chapter 7 Section 4 of the Environmental Code. An 1995 amendment to the Act concerning the management of natural resources made it possible to establish national city parks. New buildings, new installations may be erected and other measures taken within a national city park, only if this can be done without encroaching on park landscapes or natural environment and without damaging the historical nature and culture values in any other way. These rules mean that it may be possible to erect a limited number of new buildings within existing residential areas and in areas with buildings for higher education, scientific research, museums, sports and recreation. It is also possible to converting and adapting buildings according to the needs of these activities. However, these measures are to be carried out such that the character of the buildings in the park are preserved. The concept of a 'national city park' is now regulated in Chapter 4, Section 7 of the Environmental Code.
On 1 January 1995, the first, and thus far, only, national city park, the Royal National City Park, was established. It spans from Ulriksdal and Haga to Brunnsviken and Djurgården, in the municipalities of Stockholm, Solna and Lidingö.
Habitat protection is designed to preserve small areas for nationally endangered species in forested or agricultural areas. The Government or the authority appointed by the Government may take the necessary measures to conserve habitat protection areas. The Swedish Forest Agency is responsible for designation of habitat protection areas (SBO) in forest land. Government may take the necessary measures to conserve habitat protection areas. The county administrative boards are responsible for designation of habitat protection areas (ÖBO) in agriculture land. Shares and areas cannot be summed up, because different types of protection may overlap. A land or water area that belongs to the state may with the consent of Parliament be designated a national park by the Government for the purpose of preserving a large contiguous area of a certain landscape type in its natural state or essentially unchanged (Environmental Code, Chapter 7). Nature conservation areas is a type of protection supported by the former nature conservation legislation. It has the same purpose as nature reserves but is less restrictive. Designation of new nature conservation areas is no longer possible according to the current environmental legislation (Environmental Code). Share in percent refers to protected area compared to Swedens entire area. From 2023, Swedens entire area is calculated using the Land Surveys data on municipal and county boundaries (geodata Topografi 10). Earlier years in the statistics have been calculated by using Statistics Sweden´s official statistics on land and water areas. www.scb.se/mi0802-en Areas in Swedens exclusive economic zone (EEZ) are included in the Natura 2000 protection forms and in total. Area for Swedens entire economic zone has been used in calculating the share of Natura 2000 areas and total (excluding overlap). Share for other forms of protection is calculated based on area for Swedish territory. From 2023, Swedens entire area is calculated using the Land Surveys data on municipal and county boundaries (geodata Topografi 10). Earlier years in the statistics have been calculated by using Statistics Sweden´s official statistics on land and water areas. The statistics refers to areas that were valid (i.e. had gained legal force) on the December 31 reference year. Statistics of nature reserves, Natura 2000 and nature conservation agreements include areas without restrictions, for example without forestry regulations. Agreement between government agencies
Agreement since 2010 between the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and the Swedish Fortifications Administration, regarding areas that were designated 2003–2004 in the framework of the government assignment for inventory of protected state forests. The areas lack formal protection under the rules of the Environmental Code, but through the agreement and government decisions, they still have formal protection.
Number of areas regarding agreement with the Swedish Fortifications Agency, is taken from the Agreement on the protection of particularly valuable natural forest areas, 5. Natural forests Nv Dnr 310-167-10 No. Nature conservation agreement
An agreement signed between the landowner and the state, through the Swedish National Forest Agency, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency or the county administrative boards. Municipalities can also sign conservation agreements with landowners. The purpose of nature conservation agreements is to develop and maintain high nature values. The protection is limited in time and weaker than area protection according to the Environmental Code.
2021: Areas for nature conservation agreements of the type “ekoparker” are under investigation. Due to a change in methodology, values for areas have been revised regarding 2020 och 2021.

Number

Overlapping objects can be found in statistics on the number of protected areas.

Number

Number of objects refers to the number of unique objects in decisions. The number for 'Natura 2000' and 'time-limited protection: nature conservation agreements' up to and including the 2020 statistics referred to the number of individual areas in data files (the number of polygons), which were more objects than in decision-making documents.

2020

Changes in areas compared with previous years are partially due to a change in method. It affects in particular the statistics on national parks.
