Includes roads, railways, airports, ports and storage areas. Land used for postal services, telecommunication infrastructures or terminals, parking lots, funiculars, pipelines etc. are not included. Due to methodological improvements for year 2020, and in order to improve comparability, previously released figures for years 2010 and 2015 have been adjusted using the new method.

Ports

Land for ports and associated storage areas, mainly used for commercial shipping. Includes privately owned industrial and commercial ports, as well as ferry ports. Buildings for industry and storage are usually not included. Fishing ports and yacht harbours are not included.

Airports

Land for airports of any kind, including runways and associated terminals and hangars. Includes airports for both civic and defence purposes. Usually all land related to airport activities are included.

Railway area

Railway areas are land used for railways, including embankments, ditches and safety zones, but excluding areas in tunnels/ under roads, other railways/buildings etc. or that share land use with road traffic, i.e. trams. In this case of multiple land use the transport area is regarded as road area.

Railway area

Land used for rail transport of any kind, including land with railway stations, rail yards, etc.

Road area

Land used for roads which are maintained either by public authorities or by private individuals or organisations and which in principle are accessible by cars, including pedestrian areas closed for car traffic and forest roads Walkways and bicycle paths are not included.

Road area

Road area for car traffic. Includes peripheral areas such as ditches and safety zones, and, in some densely populated areas, sidewalks. Road area in tunnels is not per se connected to land use and therefore excluded.
