Land used for rail transport of any kind, including land with railway stations, rail yards, etc. Due to methodological improvements for year 2020, and in order to improve comparability, previously released figures for years 2010 and 2015 have been adjusted using the new method.

Area in tunnel

Area in tunnels includes all railway area where there is muliple land use on different vertical levels, i.e. grade separated intersections, railways under bridges etc. and where the land use is already counted for.

Area shared with road area

Road area includes the land railways occupy, which is shared with road traffic.

Total land use area

Total land use area is the land that railways alone occupy, excluding area in tunnel and land shared with road traffic.
