Population
Information on the population has been retrieved from the Total Population Register, cross-referenced with Lantmäteriet’s real estate register. The reference date is 31 December of the relevant year.
An 1995 amendment to the Act concerning the management of natural resources made it possible to establish national city parks. New buildings, new installations may be erected and other measures taken within a national city park, only if this can be done without encroaching on park landscapes or natural environment and without damaging the historical nature and culture values in any other way. These rules mean that it may be possible to erect a limited number of new buildings within existing residential areas and in areas with buildings for higher education, scientific research, museums, sports and recreation. It is also possible to converting and adapting buildings according to the needs of these activities. However, these measures are to be carried out such that the character of the buildings in the park are preserved. The concept of a "national city park" is now regulated in Chapter 4, Section 7 of the Environmental Code.
On 1 January 1995, the first, and thus far, only, national city park, the Royal National City Park, was established. It spans from Ulriksdal and Haga to Brunnsviken and Djurgården, in the municipalities of Stockholm, Solna and Lidingö.
