Footnotes

Localities situated in more than one municipality or county, will be registrated with the municipality or county where the main part of the locality is situated regarding the land area. Please read more at Localities; areas, population.
Locality references The localities that Lantmäteriet presents in the basic geodata and on general maps can sometimes differ from Statistics Sweden´s locality boundaries. Statistics Sweden´s localities are intended to be a basis for statistics, while the purpose of Lantmäteriet´s locality boundaries is to provide a basis for maps in different scales. Therefore the names that are presented in Statistics Sweden´s statistics should not be regarded as established names of localities, but as references that are representative for the marked areas, that is, a locality of Statistics Sweden. The basis for the reference is the map material from Lantmäteriet. In 2017, several locality references have been changed according to decisions of Lantmäteriet.
Locality Since 1960 Statistics Sweden has defined areas with continuous buildings and a population of at least 200 inhabitants. Localities thus include everything from the largest cities to small areas with only 200 inhabitants. Statistics Sweden does not have its own definition of sparsely populated areas or countryside areas.
Population
Information about the population is based on the Total Population Register. It includes information about registered persons per property on 31 December of the current year.
Land area
Land area is presented in the table. It is calculated as the total area minus the water area. The real estate map of Lantmäteriet (the Swedish mapping, cadastral and land registration authority) with the scale 1:10 000 is used when calculating water areas. All areas have been calculated in SWREF99 TM, spherical method. One hectare is 10 000 square metres, or 0.01 m2, that is, the area of a square measuring 100 m x 100 m.

2015
Changes have been made in the method and definition of localities, which affects the distribution of localities and the statistics. If comparisons are to be made between localities of 2015 and back in time, it is difficult to determine if the changes are due to actual changes in buildings or if they are due to the new method and definition.
2016
2016-2017 Population in localities 2016 and 2017 has been calculated using 2015 locality boundaries. This means that: 1. People living in settlements that arose immediately outside the 2015 locality boundaries are not included in the statistics. 2. The number of localities remains unchanged compared with 2015. Therefore, there exist localities that have a population of less than 200 inhabitants. 3. Small locality groups that were not classified as localities in 2015 because the population was too small, but in which the population increased in 2016 and 2017 to 200 inhabitants or more, are not included.
