The Cost-of-Living index (excluding direct taxes and social benefits) started in 1914 and ended in June 1954. Since July 1954 it is calculated using the changes in the Consumer Price Index, CPI. The Myrdal-Bouvin consumer price index for 1830 to 1930 has been used for the period prior to 1914. It is difficult to make comparisons over a long period of time, especially since the living conditions have changed dramatically since 1830.
